The City of Crawdads, Jazz and Katrina

26 03 2009

It seemed liked everyone had “Go to New Orleans” on their ‘Must Do” List and then Hurrican Katrina hit and no one knew if they wanted new-orleans-025to go to see the destruction that was left behind, or if there was an urgency to see it before another storm hit and washed it away.

Well let me tell you, I didn’t think that I would be able to check “Visit New Orleans” off my list so soon in life, but I did, and did I ever make sure that that check mark was worth its while.  Rolling into town, seeing the broken down houses and capsized boats from the storm and 8 Hours in downtown New Orleans, taking in the French Quarter, the Riverwalk, and of course, Bourbon Street!

New Orleans has this draw, this internal pulse that just makes you want to slow down your stride, turn off your phone and find the hidden secrets of the city, which are so conveniently hidden amidst fountains in courtyards and surrounded by live music.

Let me take you on a walk through the French Quarter, and when I say a walk, I really mean a full-course meal.  Drinking a Rainstorm (in a rainstorm) and munching on aligator bites and Crawdad Etoufee at Pat O’Brians.  Wandering down the street we found ourselves at The Famous Door where we tackled a few mid-Wednesday afternoon cocktails.  After all, it was happy hour.  After listening to a live band sing everything from CCR, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, and watching middle-aged businessmen hit on young spring breakers – we were on our way in search of our next meal.  Must counteract the effects of the 2 – for – 1 happy hour deal.

Wandering down the street – it’s getting busier.  We found ourselves swayed, not by food, but by a deal too good to pass up – 3 – for – 1 Happy Hour Special!  There was singing, there was dancing, there were shooter girls with all different coloured test tubes in their hands, and an innocent young spring breaker who was corrupted by the bartender and shooter girls with their low cut shirts and cleavage.  It’s only 6pm now.

Now, really in need of food, we go off foraging, asking locals along the way and come across Arnaud’s.  This just so happens to be the most upscale restaurant on Bourbon Street, there is dim lighting and all of the servers are wearing tuxedos.  Obviously, we were underdressed, but, not to turn away our business, we got shuffled into the back in the “Jazz Room”, code for “you don’t look good enough to sit in the front room where everyone can see you”.

This “Jazz Room” is where we met Adam – our server, the upsell of all salesmen.  He talked us into Souffle Potatoes, which were really just puffed up french fries, a $7 upsell to crab cakes from my original order of some sort of crab pastry, and 7 spears of asparagus, 2 baby tomatoes, 4 slices of carrot, and 10 green beans for $15!  Oh Adam, we called him on this as well, and after all of the drinks that had imbibed, congratulated him on his upsell skills.  The one thing that was our very own decision – oysters on the half-shell – and they were wonderful!

It’s 9pm now, and Bourbon Street is coming alive with music, drinking in the streets (I seem to have lost my CA instincts – cause finally, I didn’t care!), short short skirts, and kareoke at The Cat’s Meow.   Before we leave the buzz of the city and go back to work, we must make one more stop – the infamous Cafe du Monde, where I heard that you had to drink coffee and eat beignets, which are these sinful homemade triangle doughnuts covered in a mountain of powerded sugar.

Not a bad way to end a regular Wednesday afternoon.

Welcome Springtime!

23 03 2009

Since my last post, I FINALLY got out of the cold of Michigan.  I’ve been on the road on a “traveling salesperson” type tour.  In the last 2 weeks I’ve been in Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and am now in Jackson, Mississippi.

Let me tell you how happy I am to be down south.  The morning we left Philadelphia it snowed – on the FIRST day of Spring – it SNOWED.  But by that evening we were in Fort Payne, Alabama, eating BBQ and Dirt Pie and listening to some of the strongest southern accents I’ve ever heard.  Alabama is an entirely different species – although it does remind me of the movie “Sweet Home Alabama”.   It’s been a sweet ride of green grass and cherry blossoms.

Here are some pics of this leg of the tour:

Michigan…My New Home?

3 03 2009

What?  Did I just say that?  No, I don’t really mean that.  I feel like I do in fact live in Michigan now.  I’ve been here for 2 1/2 weeks all by myself.  I’ve been living in an apartment, making dinner every night, packing a lunch every day, and driving a mini van to work.  What?   Have I turned into a suburban housewife?

All is going well right now.  I’m settling into life in the office and making the 40 min commute to the office.  My first time really driving in the US, and so far, not so bad.  It gives me 80 minutes a day when I am truly on my own and have the freedom to sing along with the radio, and make random comments to myself.  I am quite proud of myself and my proficiency with the mini van and the Michigan roads, which are not the easiest to navigate.  I have now experienced almost running out of gas and having to fill up in not the most desirable neighbourhoods… and lived to tell the tale!

I watched the season finale of The Bachelor last night. DO NOT judge me.  I couldn’t resist.  But, it took me on an emotional roller coaster and I got all worked up, so that will show me to get caught up with reality TV.

Hope everyone is well!  Fingers crossed that I’m on the move out of Michigan soon…

Feeling American…

8 02 2009

I’m in Springfield, IL currently – in town for Abraham Lincoln’s birthday and his bicentennial celebrations.  Lots of people in town for the festivities and word on the street is that President Obama is going to be laying a wreath at Lincoln’s tomb on his birthday.  It just so happens that I am sitting in a mobile museum exhibit right across from the Lincoln tomb. So we shall see if there are any presidential sightings.

Last night I ended up spontaneously going to the symphony.  The Springfield Symphony Orchestra was playing a tribute to Abraham Lincoln.  It was very good, and I even spotted my good old friend – the bass clarinet.  Oh how I miss those bass tones.  Anyway, I was feeling a little too American, what with being at Lincoln’s hometown and final resting place for his birthday and staying in the Abraham Lincoln Hotel, so, to the symphony, I wore green.  No red, white or blue for me!

One other thing before I head back to the exhibit – I forgot to tell all my stories about being in DC for the Inauguration.  No time for that now, but here are some photos of the big day!

Why things are the way they are:

27 01 2009

Through my travels throughout the US of A I’m definitely starting to understand why things are the way they are.

Let me tell you a story about my lunch at a restaurant in Pennsylvania.

My sandwich:  “The Pittsburgh Special”

Description:  Sirloin or fried fish topped with tomato, cole slaw, fries and melted mozzarella cheese between 2  pieces of Texas Toast.  Meal comes with fries.

There were FRIES inside the sandwich!  Which made it almost impossible to eat.

And for dessert: “The Angry Mob”

Description: 12 scoops of ice cream, 12 ‘frownies’ (brownies that have a frown drawn on them with icing’ topped with hot fudge and whipped cream.

I did not indulge in the Angry Mob, but it was their featured dessert.

It’s all becoming clear to me…

Celebrity Sighting

8 11 2008

Very quick note:

Yesterday we opened up the pop up store at the Nets game, and we got the word that Jay Z was going to come down to see the store.  At first the email just said “Jay” was confirmed to be there at 7pm, and since we have a merchandiser named Jay from Atlanta who was supposed to be there, well, I thought nothing of it.

Well, the black car rolled up and “Jay” and his bodyguard came strolling through and just took a look around, sat down and just chilled with the RW corporate people.  Big surprise for all the people that were already in the store!  He ended up coming in again during half time with friends and he was showing them around and taking photos of the outside.  It’s great that he’s excited about it.

The funniest part was watching everyone’s reactions.  There were people that just went up to shake his hand, some just screamed and got flustered and stared at him, others were shopping right next to him and didn’t seem to notice.  One of the girls asked us if that was him or if her eyes were tricking her, and another guy, while buying a shirt, asked if there was anyway that he’d ever be able to meet Jay Z, to which I replied, ‘well he’s right over there…’

Anyway, it was very cool that he showed up, we had a quick hello when he came in, but otherwise I was busy keeping an eye on the floor and selling things.  All in all a fun night.

The Start of Something New

2 11 2008

I have been absolutely horrible about keeping up to date with this blog, however it is now November and I vow to do better…….really I do.

It’s been about a month since my last entry so here’s what’s been happening since then:

I was in Orlando Florida for a convention.  What convention you ask?  The National Funeral Director’s Association convention.  I know more about the funeral industry then I ever thought I would.  So the convention took up my day times, but I did manage an evening trip to The Magic Kingdom!  I admit, I went there in a bad mood, we aptly parked in the “Grumpy” parking lot, and as soon as I stepped onto the grounds I stepped on a piece of gum.  Picture this little asian jumping around on one foot in a circle yelling “get it off, get it off”.  Not a pretty sight!  I’m pretty sure that parents steered their children away from me.

I have no photos to share because unfortunately when I took my camera out, I somehow locked my memory card and wasn’t able to take any photos of the night.  I know, it sounds like I had a horrible time, but it was a trip back into childhood, I chased after Eeyore and screamed while riding Space Mountain (twice).  Very fun times!  But one thing was different, while riding the “It’s a Small World” ride, I thought to myself, did this ride always have such religous overtones?  “It’s a small world after all”….where we all end up dressed in white in heaven?? What??

I ended up getting called back to Detroit early, but not to worry, I enjoyed a “Staycation” right there in balmy Michigan that weekend in a random Bavarian style village called “Frankenmuth”. Picture cobblestone streets, clog shoes, people dancing the polka, caramel apple cider chai tea, and pumpkin bowling.  We also stumbled upon the largest Christmas store in North America.  Think about every colour of christmas tree, every kind of ornament and a mob of people with the mentality that it is christmas eve and they absolutely need that pink stuffed penguin, that just so happens to be in your hands.  Whoops.  No, actually I found myself quite enamoured with a green cat that looked like a watermelon.

I have been on tour with a pop up store for a clothing brand which shall remain nameless (not to worry, I’ll post a telling photo below).  We just started the tour and man has the schedule been crazy.  In 6 days I was in New Jersey, Philadelphia, Charlottesville VA, Boston, and back to New Jersey.  We followed the concert tour for Jay Z, so it was me and all my homies.  Yup, that’s right, me and the boys. I have been introduced to the world of fist bumps, shoulder checks, the “yo mama’s”, and you know, generally a culture that is a little bit out of my norm.  I know, you just pictured this in your head and giggled to yourself, and now that I’ve called you out on it, it’s turned into a ‘laugh out loud’ laugh.  Thanks for all of your support guys.

No matter, because I just spent the last 2 days in New York City.  I hustled and bustled with the best of them, experienced the craziness of time square, almost got run over by a yellow cab, had a street dog on the run, and ate the tastiest of New York Cheesecakes.   I saw the musical Wicked, which was fantastic, and made it to the Top of the Rock for the sunset.  Now the one not so sparkly moment…….I attempted to go shopping in New York for the ultimate pair of black boots.  Now this seems like every girl’s dream – shopping in New York City, well, if you have ever gone shopping with me….and some of you have done this more than you probably would have liked…..well you know, that this had trouble written all over it.

Where in the World?

6 10 2008

It has been a dizzy last 24 hours, but definitely a sneak peak as to the new path that my life has taken. 48 hours ago I thought that I would be heading off to Orlando Florida right now, thinking about how many autographs I would be getting from the characters at Disney World.  Instead, I have experienced 3 different states since then.  One call from the boss, and plans change drastically.

Sunday afternoon I enjoyed brunch at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel and took a stroll down the streets of Springfield, walking the steps of the old President Lincoln (who is celebrating his bicentennial next year), and touching famous landmarks, while sporting my new Oakley shades.

What does one do after brunch with Lincoln?  One goes to St. Louis, Missouri to take photos by the Arch and have dinner on a rooftop patio.  (I couldn’t wait, I took a bite of the creme brulee before I could get the camera out)

And what does one do after a candlelit dinner overlooking the “Gateway to the West”? You almost get on a flight to Chicago, when you’re supposed to be hopping on a flight to Detroit, Michigan to head back to the office to have conversations about a Pop Up Store for Jay Z’s clothing line and strategize on how to promote museum exhibits.

So now, I sit in a hotel room, watching Gossip Girl, thinking that I’ve only been in this new life for 3 weeks as of today, but already I have been called “the spice of Springfield”!

First Things First

30 09 2008

Current Location: Chatham, Illinois

Where have the last 2 weeks gone?  Even though this is my first official post since crossing over that Windsor – Detroit border and waiting all of 45 minutes to become a ‘legal alien’ in the US of A, I have seen no less than 7 different states.  Mind you, I think I napped right through Indiana, but I say it still counts.

Rather than bore you with all of the minute details of my travels here are the highlights:

1.  I have discovered my new favorite chocolate bar:  Snicker’s Rocky Road, a delightful snack of almonds, caramel, marshmallow nougat all wrapped up in dark chocolate (Random truck stop in Illinois)

2.  The fastest way to get across a pool with 2 pieces of cardboard, a roll of duct tape, 2 paddles and 2 people is to build a big cardboard box (Tampa, FL)

3.  I found myself taking a replica of Queen Nefertiti to a local funeral home in Chatham, IL to repair a broken hand which was a casualty of travel (Chatham, IL

4.  During a pre-season game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Canadians, I sat up close and personal 5 rows to the ice to see a Red Wings player get carried off in a stretcher and a Canadians player practically lose an eye.  (Detroit, MI)

5.  I have now been introduced to the “Love Bug”.  No, it is not that warm and gooey feeling you get when you’re with that special someone, it is in fact the most annoying harmless bug that fuses together with a mate ‘bum to bum’.  The sad thing is, they live their entire life (30 days) fused together with a mate, but they die alone… (Tampa, FL)

And on that happy note…
