Who Me?

7 04 2025

Oh there you are.

As I drank a fancy Moscow mule, eating artisanal pizza and munching on a ‘jar’cuterie,  on an open air patio in Hawaii at 9pm, I had a flash of recognition to my former self.  My ‘pre-kid, pre-school lunch and bus schedules, pick ups and monthly spelling tests, pre-paw patrol and suction cup plate’ self.

I don’t know if it was the 3 days I had been on my own or the incredible experience of swimming in the ocean with manta rays at night, but in that moment I found a piece of myself that I forgot about.  A part of me that experienced life through my own eyes instead of through the eyes of my kids, or my husband, or my company.  The last 3 days I have been able to do what I wanted, and not what needed to be done.

And what I wanted to do surprised me.  I went into this trip thinking that I would be sleeping in, journaling, reading magazines, sitting poolside, napping and playing my ukelele (a newfound passion).  And yes, I did spent time poolside and playing my ukelele, but I found myself rushing through magazines (so I didn’t have to pack them home) and journaling at the airport while I waited for my ride home!

Fresh (quiet and leisurely) breakfast

It turns out that what I really wanted to do was go snorkeling with sea turtles, experience the magic of nighttime snorkeling with manta rays, and catch as many waves as I could on a boogie board. It was extremely empowering to do all of these things by myself, without the comforting presence of my husband or the distracting (and delightful) presence of my children.  To challenge myself physically and experience that adrenaline rush.

It’s been a month since that trip and I am still feeling the effects of that solo trip.  I can still tap into that adrenaline rush.  And I can still tangibly feel that moment when I recognized and welcomed my old self back.

I’ve missed you.

Selfish? Or Not Selfish?

15 11 2023

Today I was a little bit selfish. I actually thought to myself, ‘I wonder if this is selfish?’

We spent the morning at the ‘not so secret’ Secret Beach and with the help of the full face snorkel mask, I spent a really long time exploring all that there was to see underwater.

At first I didn’t see anything except cloudy water and murky rocks, but as my eyes adjusted, everything came alive. I saw these really cool rainbow fish, a couple of puffer fish (which I haven’t seen before), this creepy slithering white and brown snake like thing, lots of those yellow, black and white fish (Gill from Finding Nemo), this really long silvery fish that had a long bill and just kind of hovered above the sand, and so many other spotted, striped, yellow, blue, silver, and white fish. And then I got kind of startled because there was this big something swimming in front of me. You guessed it, a SEA TURTLE!

So at this point, after we discovered Secret Beach last year, we have visited many times and I’ve seen sea turtles almost every time we’ve come here. It is a regular occurrence now to see the shimmering dark circles from the shore, see the cute little heads break the surface for air, and to wade through the shallows with all of the other fascinated beachgoers as we marvel at the sea turtle sightings and the fact that ‘We ARE SWIMMING WITH SEA TURTLES!!!’

And as amazing as these experiences have been, it definitely takes a lot of effort to get photos or video of these sea turtles without someone’s legs in the shot. It gets a little crowded.

So today, as I was admiring all of the fish, and giving my ‘non-swimming’ self a little pat on the back for snorkeling pretty comfortably, I saw this sea turtle swimming in front of me.

And. I. Told. No. One.

I just watched this sea turtle as it swam around, snacking on the algae on the rocks, swimming up to the surface for a breath, and then diving back down. It was amazing. I would pop my head up and see if there was anyone else around, and there really wasn’t anyone that close. I told myself, that I would really have to do a lot to draw anyone’s attention to the fact that there was a sea turtle with me. And so, I just enjoyed this experience to myself. And at one point I had TWO sea turtles swimming with me.

I’ve been waiting to come across sea turtles resting on the beach, and I thought that was the sea turtle experience that has been alluding me. But I didn’t even realize that the most special experience is to be able to observe a sea turtle in its natural habitat, to watch and wait, and be patient, and not feel like you’re chasing it with half a dozen other people.

Today was such an unexpected special experience.

So was I selfish to keep this experience all to myself? Maybe. But I don’t care.

I did tell someone that there was a sea turtle in the water…..eventually.

Just the Two of Us

11 11 2019

Something amazing happened!

20191109_102435

Nathan’s mom decided to join us on our Hawaii trip (which you’ve seen from the photos).  But this means, that not only has there been an extra set of hands to help with the girls…..but we were also able to get away for a couple of nights just the two of us!!  When was the last time that happened you ask?  It was June 2018.  HA!  (but also true).

And so, we were able to combine a work trip with a leisure trip, and we flew to the Big Island of Hawaii.

20191107_105959

Very exciting!  BUT as soon as I said my goodbyes to the girls my stomach started churning and by the time we reached the airport, I wasn’t sure if I ate something weird or if it was the nerves.  It was nerves and maybe Mama Guilt, especially since on this trip Brooklyn has just started saying, ‘mama I love you so much!’  She holds my face in her hands and looks me in the eye and tells me this over and over again (crying over here!!!)

And so we took a 45 minute flight with just a carry on.  We booked a convertible and drove with the top down every time we were in the car.

We made stops at scenic overlooks, visited beaches just to see them and took pics of all the random things we saw.

We made dinner reservations at 7:15PM!  And we floated around in an infinity pool, just because we could.  We still went to bed by 10PM…

Although we didn’t see all there was to see in Hawaii in only 2 short days, we did have a chance to visit a place that we had never been together and remember what it was like to be just the two of us again.

So I guess what I’m saying is….thank you Grandma!  And….who’s coming on our next trip with us??

ummm…should we or shouldn’t we?

10 11 2019

Today we had a lot of magical moments that took place after I thought we had one of those epic fail moments on vacation when you realized you probably made a bad vacation decision…

Waimea Falls Park

This morning would make the 3rd time I have convinced Nathan and the girls that we should go to Laniakai Beach to look for sea turtles.  We went twice last year, and this year I was convinced that things would be different, and that I wasn’t just dragging along 2 toddlers across a busy street, onto sand that was hard to get a steady footing on, to be almost hit by oncoming crashing waves.  Today…we would see SEA TURTLES!  This mantra carried us through all morning, it got us in the car by 8AM, and it got us back in the car after breakfast.

But alas, NO sea turtles…again.  The lifeguards actually apologized and said that usually they are out….but not today.

Last year, we carried two scared and crying girls back to the car, but this time the girls wanted to take their shoes off so they could have their toes in the sand (their words, not mine).

And so we ended up enjoying our time at the beach, despite not seeing sea turtles, and got the sweetest photos.

We had decided that today was going to be the day that we packed in a road trip type day and drive the North Shore and then down the windward side of the island, seeing key landmarks like the Crouching Lion and Chinaman’s Hat rock formations, the Banzai Pipeline, enjoy the grounds at Turtle Bay Resort.  Well, the girls fell asleep, so we skipped Turtle Bay, breezed past the Banzai Pipeline after I took a quick look, and the rock formations…well, they’re really just rock formations.

blog post 1384

We contemplated stopping at Kualoa Ranch for lunch, but after parking looked busy decided to move on…..but I hadn’t given much thought as to what would be after that.  It was either fast food…or Honey’s…..

blog post 1385

We found ourselves driving down this intensely green jungle-like road on our way to ‘Honey’s Restaurant’, supposedly a restaurant on the Koolau Golf course.   We drove through a gate that said First Methodist Church, and I thought I saw another sign about a golf course, but I didn’t know if it was a gate, or another road….(turns out it was a gate with a bunch of chickens, roosters and cats hanging out at it, which is also weird).

20191106_145416

Finally we can upon a building amidst these towering green cliffs, and it was the weirdest feeling….like, is this right?  Did we/I make the right decision?  There are no people around, are we sure we’re in the right place?  We walked into this quiet and empty building, walked down the stairs (still no people), into what appeared to be a restaurant, and saw a sign to seat ourselves.  Finally we saw some people (two tables).  So, yes – we were indeed at a restaurant, but what were we getting ourselves into.

Turns out we stumbled upon this perfect, quiet, empty, amazing setting to have lunch.  The girls fed fish at a koi pond, walked over this picturesque bridge and were these two little spots of red and blue amidst a sea of green.  It was so surprising and unexpected.  But it was enough for us to stay awhile, get out the big camera and go a little crazy with the pictures.

Just a Few More Adventures

12 07 2012

As a compromise for not spending the day driving to get to some of the famous Maui waterfalls…..

Iao Valley

You guessed it – it wasn’t me in the water

And we made sure to return to Honolua Bay to go snorkeling for a couple of mornings.

And we were rewarded for our early morning departure by swimming with 4 sea turtles!  The last one we saw had a missing fin, to which Nathan said, ‘shark bait’, which made me head back to shore!  By the time we made it to the overlook not only could we see turtles swimming from above, but a pod of over a dozen dolphins had joined the party!  Darn it, just missed them, however I may have freaked out if I was as close to them as the couple on surfboards.

How many dolphins?

And of course we made sure to see a few sunsets (when I wasn’t sleeping through them)

And of course, no trip to Maui is complete without a Luau.

Time For Fun!

11 07 2012

After finishing up our breakfast at Kula Lodge, the finishing touch after our morning sunrise at the summit of Haleakala, we realized that it was only 9am and we had the entire day left for adventures.

On a quest to check off all of the sites and experiences in my brochures, it seemed natural to follow up our sunrise with the Road to Hana.  So what if people typically plan separate days for these excursions?  Who says you can’t jam pack them all into one?

Well, we made our way to the bamboo forest at Twin Falls, a place that apparently my brother and sister and I revolted against in a past family vacation when we refused to leave the car.  I was determined to make the trek this time around.

Bamboo Forest (possibly…?)

I don’t think anyone can resist taking photos of the gorgeous flowers in Maui

After the bamboo forest, the Twin Falls and 10 miles of the windy Road to Hana, it became clear that perhaps it’s not necessary to go down the list of ‘Must See’ sites and check them all off the list, one after another.  We don’t need to plan every moment of our vacation and we definitely didn’t need to spend hours driving from site to site (after all, we spend most of our time traveling on the road).

But we did see parrots!

Once we turned around and decided to treat ourselves to a fantastic lunch at Mama’s Fish House, we made a decision to really experience Maui.  And that meant it was time to enjoy the sun, the sand and the surf.

For some reason it always looks like I’m in the shallows….I swear I ride some big waves too!

Luckily for everyone, no one was around to witness all the fun we were having on our little beach.  The waves were so aggressive they were trying to rip off all our clothes!

Haleakala National Park: ‘House of the Sun’

7 07 2012

There are few times when you willingly and knowingly set your alarm for 2:30am.

But for those people visiting Maui, I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of visitors plan a trip to the summit of Haleakala, the world’s largest dormant volcano, to watch the dark star-studded sky turn to deep blue, then orange, then pink as the sun makes its first appearance over the clouds of the horizon.   At over 10,000 ft high, it’s quite a view.

The Peeking Sun

Haleakala: House of the Sun

A Sunrise not to be Missed

There are definitely a few tips for this excursion that could increase the enjoyment of your experience.

  • Wake up early and get to the summit early before the sun starts to rise.  It takes about 2 hours to drive from the Wailea area, so keep that in mind.  Take time to dial in your camera settings because flash is just not going to cut it.  The tripod is very handy!
  • Dress warmly because if your hands/ears are cold it’s just no fun.  It’s not so much the temperature that was cold (although it was chilly), it was the wind that made it COLD!  So earmuffs/headbands, gloves and hot pockets are a perfect solution
  • Don’t think you need to join the masses and take in this experience at the Visitor’s Observatory area.  It gets crowded and although you may feel that this experience is best enjoyed in a quiet moment, others may not have that idea and your quiet sense of solace or romantic sunrise moment could be ruined with people fluffing their blankets around their shoulders and complaining that they aren’t getting good photos.
  • When you park your car, take the walking path to the LEFT of the parking lot, on the opposite side of the Observatory – you’ll be able to get an even better range of photos than at the Observatory – and without the crowds

Last tip.  Don’t run away as soon as the sun rises over the clouds.  There are so many moments to enjoy.

Top of the World

Haleakala Crater

One more thing.  You’re going to be hungry.  Best place to recover from the experience buzz of the sunrise and enjoy a great view of the island coast?  Kula Lodge.  Take the time to enjoy the macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup and the Loco Moco….after all, it’s only 7am.  You’ve got a whole rest of the day of adventures ahead of you.

‘We’re Having FISH Tonight!’

2 07 2012

Mahi Mahi to be specific….

Fresh Mahi Mahi

I should back up a bit.  For our second day in Maui we decided that our trip wouldn’t be complete without a catamaran ride to Molokini for a couple hours of trying to ‘be one’ with the tropical fish, which may or may not include trying to join a school of fish and trying to chase down an octopus.  So, snorkeling.

View of Haleakala

We boarded a catamaran from the beach and took off for a 4 hour trip with 50 other fish wannabees.   I don’t know how it happens, but we always end up at the helm and for the majority of the trip out to the island, we were manning the boat.  There were a couple of surprising looks close to the end of the trip when people started to take a second look and wonder if we were the ones that they boarded with at the beach or not, but overall, no one was alarmed, or harmed.

View from the Helm

After a couple hours of chasing needle fish, parrot fish, the racoonfish, Grouper etc, etc we made our way back to the beach.

With fishing lines trailing us, the crew took a gamble to see what they could catch.

Whoo Hoo.  We’ve got a live one.  Two lines caught at the same time, and although we lost one, we did reel in our mahi mahi.

Caught One!

We finished the day with mahi sandwiches and mai tai’s.  How appropriate.

Organized Fun

1 07 2012

I grew up in a household that went on family vacations every summer.  And before we stepped outside our door, all 5 of us were armed with an itinerary that scheduled out every minute of our trip.  From wake up time, to travel time, to meal times, to bed time and everything in between.  There was never a reason why you shouldn’t know exactly where you should be, and what the day would bring.  We even had scheduled shopping and beach time.  ORGANIZED FUN

Now, I’m not saying that with all of the travel that we do, I have itineraries for all of the adventures that we find ourselves in.  But, the older I get, the more I realize that I absorbed a lot more of the ‘Organized Fun’ way of thinking than I thought.

Wheels out and on the landing strip.  We arrived in Maui.  Although equipped with not much more than a car rental reservation number and an address for the hotel, it didn’t take me long to find the ‘Ultimate Driving Guide to Maui’, a ‘Best of’ Guide and a food guide.  Really, what more do you need?  I think I had prepped myself before our bags even arrived.

We couldn’t do much more than crawl into bed after making our way to the hotel at midnight, but once the light started streaming through our window at 5am…..Let the FUN begin.

Maui Sunrise from Hotel Wailea

A road map and a driving playlist.   That’s all we needed for Maui Day #1.

After getting a little carried away at the first scenic overlook (Nathan ventured down to the water, while I pointed at yellow fish that I could see in the water from above) we made our way North of the Wailea area, and along the coast past Kihei, Lahaina, and Kaanapali.

We may have strayed a little off the beaten track of the scenic overlook fence

We stopped for a beachside lunch and a dip in the water at the map described ‘everything that you would picture a beach to be’ Kapalua Beach.  In all of our excitement we didn’t seem to take a picture of this ‘perfect’ beach.  No worries though, it was only the first day and the beaches seemed to raise the bar every time we went to a different one.

A quick dip at Kapalua Beach

And then we came upon Honolua Bay.  Beautiful.  Everything that you would picture Maui to be and everything that you would want in a snorkeling area.

Honolua Bay

After blowing past the Nakalele Blowhole and playing chicken on the one lane windy road, it was 3pm.  And although not on the itinerary, it was Nap Time.  Back to the hotel….as hard as it is to ignore the beauty at Hotel Wailea.

Hotel Wailea: Surroundings & View

I slept for 14 hours that night – too much fun the last couple days I guess.  But Nathan did wake me up long enough to enjoy a little bit of our first sunset in Maui.
