Madison Square Garden in New York City.  One of the biggest concert events of the year.  A lane shut down on 7th & 32nd.  An Event Marketing first.  And a line winding down the block.

Guess who gets to walk past that long line up and hop up those steps?

Our RocPopShop event at Madison Square Garden was an amazing success.

After months of hard work, and a day of limited sleep with only mango smoothies as sustenance, the event that we’ve been working on for so long has come and passed.  But the “Awe” factor still lasts…Madison Square Garden…..CRAZY!

Goodbye Brooklyn…

8 05 2009

Okay, let’s get serious now and talk about the real Brooklyn experiences.

It’s a whole different culture over there, where the most popular male clothing size is a 38 pant and 2XL shirt, where everything is  “hey mama, how you doin“, and the girls talk about how their “booty’s kickin and their boobs are poppin’. ” It always amazed me how many things the women could hold in their bras.  I would be ringing up sales, and all of a sudden out pops a cell phone, and then out pops a whole envelope of money.  I had to take a second glance, and in my head I was thinking ‘how did that fit in there?’.  I honestly don’t get it!

Brooklyn, ny 021Brooklyn, ny 020Brooklyn, ny 014

Another thing about our Brooklyn experience EVERYONE knows Jay.  We had a constant flow of traffic coming through of people who used to go to school with him, who babysat in the same building that he lived in, that used to work with him way back when, even his ‘third cousin Monica’ said “waz up?”.

Let me tell you about the day of all days.  It shall forever be known as “The Day We Couldn’t Leave Brooklyn“.  Everything starts out very normal that day.  We were going to head into the city via NJ transit and catch a cab into Brooklyn to get the truck all wrapped up and drive it back out to Jersey.  The bus ride went smoothly.  As soon as we got into a cab at the Port Authority the cab driver said, “It’s my first day“. Not a good sign.

First we got stuck in some crazy traffic on 34th street. The cab driver was fiddling with his GPS unit, in the end, we ended up programming it for him.  But you really can’t rely on a GPS in the city – no satellite reception.  So, just when I think we’re heading in the right direction, our cab driver gets yelled at by a pedestrian who tells him to get out of the bus lane so they can get on their bus.  So flustered was the cab driver, that he ends up almost squishing another cab driver in between his cab and the other.  The GPS finally starts working, but the driver doesn’t listen to it, and we miss our turn onto the Brooklyn bridge.  Once we get over to Brooklyn we point out the big black truck on the left corner.  That is our destination.  Turn left here.  He turns RIGHT.  OK, this isn’t going well. Finally Nathan says, ‘just stop the car.  pull over right here!”  The cab driver was surprised when he didn’t get a tip.

We take care of the truck easily, and we’re off.  Only to get stopped 5 minutes into our journey because the Interstate is blocked off due to a Tri-Boro Bike Race.  So we get redirected in the other direction, take the first exit, and end up in the middle of CRAZY traffic.  People were actually trying to put their cars in reverse and back down the on-ramp.

Just when we thought we were on the right track – the Interstate was blocked off in this direction as well and we were getting dumped right back where we started.  But this time we couldn’t take the turn as easily, and there might have been some strong words with the police and illegal cone touching.  Anyway, we ended up lost in the tiny streets of Brooklyn until we get into this narrow construction zone on our way to the Interstate (for the third time).  I look up and there’s an underpass…. 12′ ~ .  Twelve foot squiggle??  We’re 13’ 6″, this isn’t going to work.  For whatever reason the underpass wasn’t marked right, just as we go under I hear a ‘crunch, crunch, crunch’.

Turns out a little Toyota turned her wheels to get into our lane and our tires bumped.  She knocked off 3 decorative caps off our tires, and she gets to be the lucky person that gets hit by an 18 wheel tractor trailer with no damage!

After 4 1/2 hours, we finally make it out of Brooklyn and back to our hotel.  We drove a total of 41 miles.

“Hello Brooklyn”

29 04 2009

It has been almost one month since we first landed in New York City.

Who knew that we would live the life of regular New York locals – living in Jersey and taking the Lincoln Tunnel commute every morning.

Who knew that we would become familiar faces on the streets of Brookyln, get preferential treatment at a local bagel shop, and recognize people around the city.

It’s been a fairly uneventful stay so far, but it has had its moments.

1)  Nathan and I are becoming Street Fighter Champions (during those slow periods at the pop shop, what else is there to do but to play Street Fighter on the X Box, although the customers are now taking turns beating me at the game)

2) One rainy weekday morning we had a surprise celebrity visiter.  Ed Lover came to visit and get some free clothes.  Now, personally I really had no idea who he was, but Nathan recognized him as the infamous Ed Lover from MTV Raps, previously of the Ed Lover and Dr. Dre combination.  He’s now a big radio personality

3) We were invited out to dinner at Wolfgang’s, a very good steak restaurant inTribeca, during the Tribeca film festival

4)  We’ve booked an all-inclusive vacation for 9 days in….you guessed it – MEXICO.  We’ll see what we end up doing with that or if we change our destination.  You can’t go anywhere now without someone talking about Swine Flu.

5)  We’ve become experts in the retail industry.  I now know how to ‘paperfold’ shirts and have learned all the merchandising tricks of the trade.  Nathan has been doing his part by specializing in the exclusive ladies line and talking about the ‘extra bling on the shirts’ and the ‘colours that pop’.

All in all, it’s been an interesting time in Brooklyn.  Sorry for the lack of photos, but there really isn’t much to see in the middle of the Brooklyn hood, at what used to be an empty construction lot.

One last hightlight – we ended up in a place called Teaneck, NJ in search of a Dairy Queen for their Midnight Truffle blizzard.  The place was an old-fashioned barn style building with line ups down the streets – who knew Dairy Queens were such a big deal?

I start off with this photo because this, my friend, is the money shot.  Let me set the scene for you:

New York City….

5:00am….

Pouring Rain….

The Meat Packing District…

Amid all of these narrow one-way streets and decorative marshmallow shaped boulders, rolls a big black 18 wheel tractor trailer.  Little would anyone think that no more than 12 hours later, the streets would be packed with paparazzi (well, let’s say 10 paparazzi), the RW pop shop would be filled with the new summer men’s and women’s line and Jay would be hanging out playing x box with me (and when I say with me, I actually mean I helped set the system up, chatted with him for a couple of minutes and then got the hell out of the way, because who are we kidding – I don’t know how to play x-box!).

So everything went extremely well with the event.  The Meat Packing District would exactly be the target market, BUT we definitely made an impact on all of the european tourists that were around.

Two days later the streets really were flooded with paparazzi.  (note the limited edition bag that was made specifically for the pop shop)

Welcome Springtime!

23 03 2009

Since my last post, I FINALLY got out of the cold of Michigan.  I’ve been on the road on a “traveling salesperson” type tour.  In the last 2 weeks I’ve been in Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and am now in Jackson, Mississippi.

Let me tell you how happy I am to be down south.  The morning we left Philadelphia it snowed – on the FIRST day of Spring – it SNOWED.  But by that evening we were in Fort Payne, Alabama, eating BBQ and Dirt Pie and listening to some of the strongest southern accents I’ve ever heard.  Alabama is an entirely different species – although it does remind me of the movie “Sweet Home Alabama”.   It’s been a sweet ride of green grass and cherry blossoms.

Here are some pics of this leg of the tour:

Feeling American…

8 02 2009

I’m in Springfield, IL currently – in town for Abraham Lincoln’s birthday and his bicentennial celebrations.  Lots of people in town for the festivities and word on the street is that President Obama is going to be laying a wreath at Lincoln’s tomb on his birthday.  It just so happens that I am sitting in a mobile museum exhibit right across from the Lincoln tomb. So we shall see if there are any presidential sightings.

Last night I ended up spontaneously going to the symphony.  The Springfield Symphony Orchestra was playing a tribute to Abraham Lincoln.  It was very good, and I even spotted my good old friend – the bass clarinet.  Oh how I miss those bass tones.  Anyway, I was feeling a little too American, what with being at Lincoln’s hometown and final resting place for his birthday and staying in the Abraham Lincoln Hotel, so, to the symphony, I wore green.  No red, white or blue for me!

One other thing before I head back to the exhibit – I forgot to tell all my stories about being in DC for the Inauguration.  No time for that now, but here are some photos of the big day!

Celebrity Sighting

8 11 2008

Very quick note:

Yesterday we opened up the pop up store at the Nets game, and we got the word that Jay Z was going to come down to see the store.  At first the email just said “Jay” was confirmed to be there at 7pm, and since we have a merchandiser named Jay from Atlanta who was supposed to be there, well, I thought nothing of it.

Well, the black car rolled up and “Jay” and his bodyguard came strolling through and just took a look around, sat down and just chilled with the RW corporate people.  Big surprise for all the people that were already in the store!  He ended up coming in again during half time with friends and he was showing them around and taking photos of the outside.  It’s great that he’s excited about it.

The funniest part was watching everyone’s reactions.  There were people that just went up to shake his hand, some just screamed and got flustered and stared at him, others were shopping right next to him and didn’t seem to notice.  One of the girls asked us if that was him or if her eyes were tricking her, and another guy, while buying a shirt, asked if there was anyway that he’d ever be able to meet Jay Z, to which I replied, ‘well he’s right over there…’

Anyway, it was very cool that he showed up, we had a quick hello when he came in, but otherwise I was busy keeping an eye on the floor and selling things.  All in all a fun night.

The Start of Something New

2 11 2008

I have been absolutely horrible about keeping up to date with this blog, however it is now November and I vow to do better…….really I do.

It’s been about a month since my last entry so here’s what’s been happening since then:

I was in Orlando Florida for a convention.  What convention you ask?  The National Funeral Director’s Association convention.  I know more about the funeral industry then I ever thought I would.  So the convention took up my day times, but I did manage an evening trip to The Magic Kingdom!  I admit, I went there in a bad mood, we aptly parked in the “Grumpy” parking lot, and as soon as I stepped onto the grounds I stepped on a piece of gum.  Picture this little asian jumping around on one foot in a circle yelling “get it off, get it off”.  Not a pretty sight!  I’m pretty sure that parents steered their children away from me.

I have no photos to share because unfortunately when I took my camera out, I somehow locked my memory card and wasn’t able to take any photos of the night.  I know, it sounds like I had a horrible time, but it was a trip back into childhood, I chased after Eeyore and screamed while riding Space Mountain (twice).  Very fun times!  But one thing was different, while riding the “It’s a Small World” ride, I thought to myself, did this ride always have such religous overtones?  “It’s a small world after all”….where we all end up dressed in white in heaven?? What??

I ended up getting called back to Detroit early, but not to worry, I enjoyed a “Staycation” right there in balmy Michigan that weekend in a random Bavarian style village called “Frankenmuth”. Picture cobblestone streets, clog shoes, people dancing the polka, caramel apple cider chai tea, and pumpkin bowling.  We also stumbled upon the largest Christmas store in North America.  Think about every colour of christmas tree, every kind of ornament and a mob of people with the mentality that it is christmas eve and they absolutely need that pink stuffed penguin, that just so happens to be in your hands.  Whoops.  No, actually I found myself quite enamoured with a green cat that looked like a watermelon.

I have been on tour with a pop up store for a clothing brand which shall remain nameless (not to worry, I’ll post a telling photo below).  We just started the tour and man has the schedule been crazy.  In 6 days I was in New Jersey, Philadelphia, Charlottesville VA, Boston, and back to New Jersey.  We followed the concert tour for Jay Z, so it was me and all my homies.  Yup, that’s right, me and the boys. I have been introduced to the world of fist bumps, shoulder checks, the “yo mama’s”, and you know, generally a culture that is a little bit out of my norm.  I know, you just pictured this in your head and giggled to yourself, and now that I’ve called you out on it, it’s turned into a ‘laugh out loud’ laugh.  Thanks for all of your support guys.

No matter, because I just spent the last 2 days in New York City.  I hustled and bustled with the best of them, experienced the craziness of time square, almost got run over by a yellow cab, had a street dog on the run, and ate the tastiest of New York Cheesecakes.   I saw the musical Wicked, which was fantastic, and made it to the Top of the Rock for the sunset.  Now the one not so sparkly moment…….I attempted to go shopping in New York for the ultimate pair of black boots.  Now this seems like every girl’s dream – shopping in New York City, well, if you have ever gone shopping with me….and some of you have done this more than you probably would have liked…..well you know, that this had trouble written all over it.

Where in the World?

6 10 2008

It has been a dizzy last 24 hours, but definitely a sneak peak as to the new path that my life has taken. 48 hours ago I thought that I would be heading off to Orlando Florida right now, thinking about how many autographs I would be getting from the characters at Disney World.  Instead, I have experienced 3 different states since then.  One call from the boss, and plans change drastically.

Sunday afternoon I enjoyed brunch at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel and took a stroll down the streets of Springfield, walking the steps of the old President Lincoln (who is celebrating his bicentennial next year), and touching famous landmarks, while sporting my new Oakley shades.

What does one do after brunch with Lincoln?  One goes to St. Louis, Missouri to take photos by the Arch and have dinner on a rooftop patio.  (I couldn’t wait, I took a bite of the creme brulee before I could get the camera out)

And what does one do after a candlelit dinner overlooking the “Gateway to the West”? You almost get on a flight to Chicago, when you’re supposed to be hopping on a flight to Detroit, Michigan to head back to the office to have conversations about a Pop Up Store for Jay Z’s clothing line and strategize on how to promote museum exhibits.

So now, I sit in a hotel room, watching Gossip Girl, thinking that I’ve only been in this new life for 3 weeks as of today, but already I have been called “the spice of Springfield”!
