Olympic Memories

7 03 2010

After 16 days of checking the CTV Olympic Iphone App every hour, spending every evening falling asleep to speed skating, figure skating, bobsledding and other winter sporting events and pointing out to Nathan that although the US may have more medals in total, Canada has more GOLD medals….the Olympics are over.

Even though I only had a chance to take in the Olympic frenzy for the opening weekend, the memories are definitely going to be lasting.   Where else other than Disneyland do you chase people down the street yelling, “can we take a picture with you?” AND when are they standing around (like Disney characters) waiting to have their picture taken?

When else would I drag myself out of bed (after only 4 hours of sleep) to get on a bus while it’s still dark outside to go to an arena where there “may or may not be athletes present”? Lucky for me, there were athletes present during the pairs figure skating training session, and also lucky for me, I was not the only one that got sucked into paying for tickets to a non-event, with no promise of athletes showing up except for the zamboni man (who, I have to say, lived up to my expectations!).

When else will I ever LOVE the fact that I look exactly like everyone else in Vancouver and exasperate my friends more when I wander off and blend into the crowd – EVERYONE is dressed in a Canada toque, scarf, and red mittens – and the majority of people – Asian!

When else would I be at a Sweden vs Switzerland hockey game yelling my head off and annoying my neighbours while clanging a commemorative cow bell?  Maybe the bigger question is, when else will I ever have another  commemorative cow bell?  And, is there ever going to be another time when I’m running down the streets of Vancouver thinking that I’m running towards Wayne Gretzky only to realize that we’re running in the wrong direction, and then get stopped by the police to make way for Vice President Joe Biden’s motorcade?

All I can say with certainty is that I have never had more Canadian pride than seeing people dressed in red, with Canadian sweatshirts, scarves, toques, red Olympic mittens and Canada Flags draped around their shoulders hosting the world in my favourite Canadian city – Vancouver.

The only true way to experience the Olympic Games is when its in your hometown and you’re in the heart of it.

OH CANADA!

The rain didn’t dampen the excitement of the crowd as the Olympic Flame was marched through the streets and we came out in our Red & White with the best of them!

Blue Jays, Caesars and Poutine. That’s Canada Eh?

We found ourselves crossing borders and venturing into the familiar territory of Toronto last weekend.  Let’s just say, in comparison to Detroit, Toronto is a whole different world.

I think this was one of the first times I really looked at Toronto and saw the great city that it is.  Driving into the city skyline, I could feel the excitement of the city, the buzz in the air, and the taste of Spicy Caesars and steaks from the Keg on my tongue.

We stayed in a hotel downtown in the Entertainment District and there was this little alley club right beside the hotel that I had a strange sense of deja vu every time we walked by.   I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I feel like I’ve danced the night away in this little alley club in the past.

As always, we had no plans, but a very busy schedule.   Within 30 minutes of walking out of the doors of our hotel, I had a hair appointment booked, we had tickets to a Toronto Blue Jays game, we investigated an event marketing program and we had plans to watch free cirque du soleil shows all weekend.

We sat 6 rows up behind third base.  We had great seats.  So great, that we were in the middle of all of the heckling.   Baseball fans are really original with their heckling insults.  These fans had a great dislike for the players shoes.  The heckling went something like this, “Porter, Porter, over here.  Nice shoes Porter!  I like your shoes, where did get them?  Nice bum Porter“.   Very creative.

We attempted to go kayaking in the harbour one morning, only to find out that all of the kayaks had been donated to Paddlefest, and there were none available.  This conversation just so happened to be right beside probably 50 kayak slips…..that were full.  But, apparently there were no kayaks available.

All in all, a great weekend.  Dinners with my sister and her boyfriend, and a special brunch of homemade crepes.  An afternoon on a waterfront patio with friends and ice cream for dessert.  And waiting with hundreds of other people to see the Luminato Cirque du Soleil finale at an outdoor stage with the CN tower in the background.

First Things First

30 09 2008

Current Location: Chatham, Illinois

Where have the last 2 weeks gone?  Even though this is my first official post since crossing over that Windsor – Detroit border and waiting all of 45 minutes to become a ‘legal alien’ in the US of A, I have seen no less than 7 different states.  Mind you, I think I napped right through Indiana, but I say it still counts.

Rather than bore you with all of the minute details of my travels here are the highlights:

1.  I have discovered my new favorite chocolate bar:  Snicker’s Rocky Road, a delightful snack of almonds, caramel, marshmallow nougat all wrapped up in dark chocolate (Random truck stop in Illinois)

2.  The fastest way to get across a pool with 2 pieces of cardboard, a roll of duct tape, 2 paddles and 2 people is to build a big cardboard box (Tampa, FL)

3.  I found myself taking a replica of Queen Nefertiti to a local funeral home in Chatham, IL to repair a broken hand which was a casualty of travel (Chatham, IL

4.  During a pre-season game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Canadians, I sat up close and personal 5 rows to the ice to see a Red Wings player get carried off in a stretcher and a Canadians player practically lose an eye.  (Detroit, MI)

5.  I have now been introduced to the “Love Bug”.  No, it is not that warm and gooey feeling you get when you’re with that special someone, it is in fact the most annoying harmless bug that fuses together with a mate ‘bum to bum’.  The sad thing is, they live their entire life (30 days) fused together with a mate, but they die alone… (Tampa, FL)

And on that happy note…
